Boxborough now has its own cable channel operating on Channel 9. If you have an interest in this area, this is a great time to get involved. Call Town Hall at 978-263-1116 or attend one of the Cable Advisory Committee meetings. BOXBOROUGH CABLE SYSTEM STATUS - April 2003 The one week notice, referred to below, was sent out last week to all current cable subscribers. It contained a cover letter, a new channel lineup card, and a brochure on Comcast High-Speed Internet. The good news is that the rebuild continues on schedule and this Wednesday (April 9, 2003) is the cutover date. That will be the start of the new channel lineup and also the date that residents can start to order digital cable or high-speed Internet. Please note that in addition to several new offerings, the channel assignment of many of the current offerings will change. The Boxborough Channel which has been off the air for the move to Town Hall will be back up this Wednesday on Channel 9, which is the new permanent channel assignment. Channel 8 will now be Acton public access. We have also posted a new document on Cable Modems. See this for more information on this area. BOXBOROUGH CABLE SYSTEM STATUS - March 2003 The 30-day notice, referred to below in the January status update, has been sent out to all current subscribers. It contains the new channels to be added and the current expected cutover date of 9-Apr-2003.
The good news for Boxborough in 2003 is that the cable system rebuild originally scheduled for completion in August of 2003 will now be done by March of 2003. This rebuild is needed in order to support digital cable and high-speed data access. The more aggressive rebuild schedule is the result of our new cable provider, Comcast, which completed the acquisition of AT&T Broadband at the end 0f 2002. You have probably seen the cable trucks in the area since early December and the December 23rd article in the Globe. The current plan is to switch all of Boxborough over to the new system at one time. This is currently estimated to be mid-March. You will receive a notice in the mail about 30 days prior to this switch. A second notice will be sent 7 days prior to the changeover giving the exact day and information on any changes to the basic channel lineup. At the time you receive this second notice, you may then order digital cable or high-speed data access. We know there is a lot of interest in high-speed data access within Boxborough. The offering is expected to be very similar to what Acton has currently. It will require a data modem, which can be rented or purchased from Comcast or bought directly from one of the local stores like Best Buy. There is also a monthly charge for the service. For general information on broadband data access, see the updated version of Broadband for Boxborough - Summary and Issues. We will update this information and provide more specific details, as we get closer to the actual changeover date. Please send questions or comments to cable@town.boxborough.ma.us . |
